When I was little I used to have a froat. Now when I’m home sick with a burning inside my neck I feel like a little kid with a froat. I have a sore throat and it just sucks the energy out of me because the aching and stinging won’t go away. I would gladly wake up to my mom by my side to take care of me. No one likes having a sore throat. Now, I’m home alone (Isabelle is off climbing at Brooklyn Boulders Somerville with her dad and Henry is out playing with a friend.) and I need to take care of myself. This isn’t medicine and it isn’t a cocktail but it tastes good to me and it works well.
Here is the perfect sore throat soother, a variation on what my mom would sometimes make me.
This is not medicine nor is it a cocktail, but it is soothing and works for a sore throat.
Ingredients
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1 oz of Bourbon
- 1 TBSP of Honey
- 6 oz or so of Boiling Water
Instructions
- Squeeze the lemon juice into your favourite mug. Add in the honey (more or less to taste). Add the Bourbon and then stir. Top off the mixture with boiling water to fill the mug.
Notes
You can adjust more or less honey, lemon juice and water. 1 oz of Bourbon is just right though.

Rest. Drink plenty of water and tea and such. Feel better soon.
How do you take care of yourself when you are also taking care of the family? Do you have a tried and true way to soothe a sore throat? You can also make this recipe with extra lemon juice and honey and skip the Bourbon if you do not drink bourbon or drink at all. You can also add in cinnamon or some fresh ginger juice.
Tell Dan he’s on parenting duty and keep the soother (or hot toddy) going until you either feel better or, at least, no longer give a damn that you’re sick. ☺
