If you know me, you know I love Cirque du Soleil. If you have seen them then you understand my love. If you have not seen them yet, when you do you’ll understand. When I first heard about Axel, Cirque du Soleil but on ice, I was a bit perplexed. How is that going to work?
Of course, it’s Cirque du Soleil, so not only does it work, but it sparkles. The show started off a little slowly and built to an incredible crescendo.
So how, exactly does Cirque du Soleil translate on ice? Well, the music was live and rocking as always. The soundtrack has an 80’s Madonna, Cypress Hill, and the Pretenders vibe. The lighting, costume and makeup were creative and evoked the era so well. The love story touched everyone in the audience as we collectively gasped when the light was almost lost. There were acrobatics just this time with skates on (much of the time). Somehow it all came together and while it is very different from a big too performance Axel absolutely worked and Cirque du Soleil continues to impress and expand the modalities of circus.
Cirque de Soleil managed to find a way to create their own ice skate stilts, add in more robotics, and clown around on a frozen surface too.
I think this performance is geared for a slightly older crowd than some of the big top shows which work for all ages. Axel seems better suited for children 10 through adult.
Axel will be at Worcester’s DCU center through December 8th. Get your tickets before it heads out of town to Quebec, Montreal, Detroit, Milwaukee and beyond. Tickets start at $25 and can be purchased online here .
