Australia is on fire and they need our help. Here are three tasty ways we can put money where our mouths are. These local chefs and shops have set up ways to send funds to Australia while also enjoying tasty treats back at home.
Bluestone Lane Café
At Bluestone Lane, Wednesday January 8th through Friday January 10th all profits will go to the American Red Cross and their Australian Bushfire Emergency Relief Fund.
In addition, at the Harvard Square location (where Crema Café once was) on Sunday, January 26th there will be an Australian Bushfire Appeal Events with all proceeds from ticket sales and fundraising initiatives such as auctions and raffles being donated.
More information on purchasing tickets shortly on their website.
For the whole month of January Bluestone Lane will be accepting donations in store or via their Mobile app by allowing locals to add a donation to any order.
If you would like to make an additional donation at a location please let the staff know before paying.
Clearflour Bread is baking Lamingtons and Damper bread this weekend. All proceeds will go to Wires Wildlife Rescue. Lamingtons are cream or jam filled cakes lightly dusted with coconut. Clearflour seems to be making the jammy version, which looks delicious and can be spotted over on their Instagram feed. Damper Bread is an Australian soda bread. Wires Wildlife Rescue is Australia’s largest wildlife rescue organization.
Boston Barbie for Bushfires
20 or so local chefs and food and drink folks have come together to create Boston Barbie for Bushfires in order to send funds to help, for some, their motherland.
We are doing what a lot of our Aussie friends at home would do if they could, and bringing everyone together with food and community to help all those suffering the truly crushing effects of these fires.
On Tuesday January, 28th from 7-9 pm, in addition to delicious food and great company, there will be a raffle and silent auction. The event will be held at Capo Restaurant and Supper Club in South Boston, which is a great space to check out if you have never been. Tickets are $150 and can be purchased here.
All proceeds will be passed on to a number of amazing services that have been integral with the fire fighting effort, saving lives and supporting those most in need during this monumental crisis. This hell has only just begun, and it won’t end when the fires go out. So many have lost everything. The affected communities will need to rebuild absolutely everything from water systems, electricity grids to homes, hospitals, shops and schools. NSW alone has lost a third of its koala population. Millions of animals need our help.
If you are busy at home you can always support these efforts by donation online to these organizations Bluestone Lane has a list of organizations on their site just scroll to the bottom of the page.
