Message in a Bottle: Kate Prince’s Choreography, and Sting’s Music Speaks to Boston Audiences

I watched a parade of people, mostly my age, many with their adult or young adult children, our spouses, groups of women, and couples file into the Emerson Colonial last week. All I knew about the show going in, was that there would be Sting’s music and dancing, and that was enough for me. It is said that all art is political and there is no doubt that Sting’s music is. In Message In a Bottle, somehow a hopeful energy comes of a show that reflects back to us some of the horrors of our world today. Ways in which we treat humans that has not changed much since when many of Sting’s songs were first written. Perhaps it is the the love stories, or maybe just the life force of dance itself, but despite stories of struggle, loss, and abuse of power, you leave Message In a Bottle with a zest for life and a desire to continue to make change happen.

Message in a Bottle is a A Sadler’s Wells and Universal Music UK production with Kate Prince directing and choreographing to Sting’s music. It is an evening of high energy dance that tells a story of human experience through dance and dozens of Sting songs. It is such a creative production, with skilled dancers of all styles, and sets, staging and lighting that bring the whole show to another level without taking away from the music and dance.

We live in a world where one person is forcibly displaced every two seconds as a result of conflict or persecution. In 2022 statistics show that over 100million people around the globe had been forced from their homes. More than thirty-two million of those people are refugees, and half of them are under eighteen years old.

We are confronted by stories of displacement every day – in newspapers, on television and on our streets. We regularly hear about migrants fleeing oppressive regimes, but the focus is often on the catastrophic political in-fighting and violence and we lose sight of the people affected.

Message In A Bottle is an imagined story about one family.

Sting’s deep, rich, political voice was a dominant one in the soundtrack of my teen years. Dedicating an evening to his voice again was a treat. I forgot how much I loved Sting and U2, reminded mostly by finding myself singing almost every word to every song all night long (respectfully quietly under my mask and later blasting and belting on the drive home). Add my love for all things dance, and I felt like a kid in a candy store.

I am extremely critical when it comes to choreography. I started creating dances at a very young age, and had the chance to work with many talented choreographers way before the “dance competetion” style started taking over. Luckily, Message in a Bottle stayed away from tricks for the sake of tricks and the choreography was meaningful. When the show started, I was already in love with the music starting strong with Desert Rose, If I Ever Lose My Faith in You and Every Little Thing She Does is Magic. The set was simple but effective and as the show went on became more sophisticated and intriguing. To start, the choreography was good, but a little cliché and predictable. I started to worry if it would fall short. That quickly changed though and each peice was better than the last. By the time we got to Fields of Gold and King of Pain, next, I was completely invested and settled in for a fabulous performance. I fell for the dancers and choreographers hard, with each dancer keeping their own personality and style.
