Teddy Swims: Kicks Off Summer at Suffolk Downs This Week

Teddy Swims is a bold presence on stage. His tattooed face, wide expressive eyes and facial hair are the outer casing to a soft sweet storyteller singing. Swims sings about love, heartbreak and all the emotions being human kicks up. His voice is powerful. The soulfulness is relatable and the energy he emits is one of compassion and connection. When I saw Teddy Swims perform at Soundside Festival in the fall, his devoted fans were locked in for every lyric. Swims didn’t just capture the attention of his fans though. his voice drew in all the festival attendees out on the harbourside festival park.

Teddy Swims songs are very personal. They are full of emotion and energy and on topics that are so many can relate to. Swims creates a sense of “we”re in this together” with his songs and has choruses that everyone can sing their hearts out to. Teddy Swims has been putting out music since 2019 but his first studio album I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part1) was released in September 2023.

I’m happy to be a part of a generation that is finally talking about mental health issues more openly. I try to be as open as possible about what I’m going through in my own personal life. My debut album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1), is an honest look into my mental health journey. I believe therapy could really be beneficial to myself and anyone willing to take the steps to heal. But, for some reason I still have something holding me back. I’m afraid of therapy because I love the coping mechanisms I use on a regular basis… whether it’s biting my nails, drinking alcohol, or resorting back to my ticks… These feel safe to me. I know there are answers to the questions I’m not ready to ask myself. This album is my first step towards being vulnerable about this journey and the steps I need to take to heal.
