Fun Home: The Holiday Musical To See With Family

Fun Home has opened st The Huntington and, in a weird way, it is the best way to enter into the holiday season, which is filled with family time however wonderful or problematic that may be. The stars of this production are exceptionally talented. The story is heartwarming and heartbreaking wrapped in a succinct little one hour and forty minute package. Fun Home is about a 40 something Lesbian cartoonist trying to make sense of her childhood. Your personal Venn diagram may or may not intersect with most of the identities in this musical but at very least, we were all children once and that is the minimum intersection you need to get a whole lot out of a night at the theatre.

The set was impressive as it has been so far at every production I have see put on by The Huntington Theatre. The music of Fun Home is not necessarily the catchiest score, but an entertaining one. There are some heartbreaking songs and others that just help move the story along, but there were a couple songs I found exceptional (one powerful and one really playful). The three actors who played Alison Bechdel, the real life best selling graphic novelist whose graphic novel memoir became Fun Home, are so good at capturing the different phases of life and emanating the entire feel if what it is to exist in that phase of life.

Fun Home has very heavy themes and somehow, despite a few tears, you don’t leave the theatre completely drained. There is a sort of exploration of childhood and revisiting things with adult insight and intuition that feels cathartic too.

The cast overall was very good with Sarah Bockel, Maya Jacobson, and Lyla Randall exceptional. Caleb Levin and Sushma Saha also deserve mention for their roles.
