Summer music festival season is in full swing and the world is gathering in fields, on islands, by the water, in the mountains, bay side and river side for dawn until dusk days filled with music. Newport Folk Festival began in 1959 and has grown into what it is today retaining some of the community, charm and commitment to music and musicians that existed in its naissance. Going to a festival is not just about knowing the line up, but also getting to know the space, the flow of the people in the space, the rules that make it pleasant for everyone and what to expect within the community. For Newport Folk Festival 2026, which is July 24th, 25th and 26th, let me walk you through a little bit of everything so you can have the time of your life whether you are going for the 30th year in a row or the first time.

Plan Ahead
When you’re in a small state and heading to a fort surrounded by water for a weekend full of music with up to 12,000 other music lovers some advance planning is necessary. Where are you staying? How are you getting to the fort? How many days are you going to be in town? Lodging fills up fast, but there are many nearby towns to choose from. It is possible to drive down every day if you have it in you. there are also trains and ferries that that run from Providence to Newport if you time your day correctly. You can find more general information about travel and parking on the Newport Folk Festival website here.
As for lodging, many of the hotels will be sold out by now, but if you look at a map and decide how far you are willing to drive each night you will find some options. Don’t forget to consider airbnb, VRBO and old school vacation rental services as well to find a last minute place to stay if you forgot about that piece of the puzzle.
The Newport Folk Festival rules begin with: be kind. It should be second nature, but we are living in a world that makes being kind more of a novelty than a core part of our existence. It is going out to festivals and seeing live music that helps us find our way back to that. You can read the rest of the rules here.

The Line Up
Logistics are not quite as fun, so here is the fun part! I like to make a general plan of who I want to see, with my list of must see bands and then all the others sets I want to catch as well. Then allow for plans to change or moods to shift. I’ll often end up seeing someone else or staying somewhere longer than I planned because it just feels right. Below, I’ll put a little * next to the bands I definitely want to see and ^ next to ones I have seen before. No star doesn’t mean I don’t want to catch the band, I just don’t know them enough yet to prioritize. I have some music to listen to before I make any final decisions.

The Layout
Once you get to “the fort” you have everything you need. It is your little oasis for the day. How much you bring is up to you (barring anything prohibited). Plan to, at very least, bring a water bottle to refill, some sunscreen and if you like a blanket to sit on the grass for a while or a low chair (under 30″ idea or under 34″ for the back of the lawn area). Bring any necessary medication along with a prescription that matches the name on your id. Then settle in; this is your home, your community, your nirvana for the day.

Newport Folk Festival has three primary stages, one sweet, water-side Foundation Stage and a quirky and fun bike powered stage. I highly recommend making time for all four stages. You will discover new artists, make new friends, or simply have a new experience.

The main stage where Newport Folk Festival will close out the evening each night is the Fort Stage. The Fort Stage looks out to the water, boats gather around the shore to hear bands and fans will claim spots in front of the Fort Stage with blankets early on in the day. You don’t have to be up close to enjoy the music though. Choose what works for you. A stroll around while the music plays is just as good as snuggling up on a blanket with your loved ones or standing at the rail for hours so you can be front row for the last show of the evening. To each their own.

To the right of the Fort Stage, towards the water and away from the entrance is where the Foundation Stage is usually set up. It has a gorgeous water back drop and you can usually sit at the artists’ feet while they play, hang around and chat after and take a break from the larger crowds.

Just around the corner by the outer wall of the fort will be the Harbor Stage. It has plenty of shade but fills up fast. You can also grab a bite to eat just across the path from the Harbor Stage and sit at a table while you listen to the artists do their thing.
Inside the fort walls if you walk straight across the field you will find the Bicycle Stage, and a little section filled with bikes that you can ride to power the stage. It is a lot of fun. It is where artists gather to tell stories, sing together, play together, and have a relaxed song or two at the open mic.

Inside the fort walls is also where you find the Quad Stage. The Quad Stage also has some nice shade, you will find couples dancing just next to the tent, people on chairs and blankets just outside the tent. It is often a little more spacious around the Quad Stage than some of the others which is also nice when you need a little break but still want to catch a set.
Hydrate and Hunger
Definitely bring a water bottle to fill up throughout the day, but you can also treat yourself to some nice cold drinks at Newport Folk Festival. You can’t come to RI and not have the chance to cool off and quench your thirst without Del’s Lemonade and a soft frozen lemonade can revive you like not much else can on a hot summer’s day. The grown-ups can sip on some Stowe Cider and visit the beer and wine gardens starting at noon.

A Refresher on Getting There
You can get to Newport Folk Festival a variety of ways. It depends where you are coming from and what mode of transportation you have access to. If you need parking for your car, reserve all three days, two day, or single day parking here. Biking to the festival is a great way to start and end the day. Here is the information for biking to the festival. If you are coming by boat there are several options: Newport Water Shuttle, reserved Express Shuttle from Newport, the Jamestown Newport Ferry, and if you are coming from Providence to Newport by ferry you will want to take the Seastreak Ferry.
Have fun and hope to see you at “the fort” some day soon!
