My journey back to concerts began mostly because my child was too young to get into certain venues alone. It was the perfect push to go back to something I loved as a teenager, then was too poor as a college student to partake in, and now as a full-fledged adult I am making up for lost time and having the time of my life. Boston is a great place to enjoy concerts in venues that run the gamut from tiny and intimate to large and raucous. In concert is a series that recaps concerts primarily in Boston. In Concert, is a vignette of each show, hopefully to inspire you to take a listen to a new band and catch them next time they are in town if you’re a fan. I love a wide range of music styles and always prefer to be standing on the floor than seated at a concert because I love to dance. Each vignette will include a little 101 on the venue as well.

When + Where
Sunday, July 7th 2024 in Boston kitty corner to Fenway park. It was a hot summer night following a streak of a hot summer days. The concert was at MGM Music Hall at Fenway. MGM Music Hall is right in the heart of Fenway on a corner shoulder to shoulder with Fenway Park, which also hosts the occasional concert. MGM Music Hall is one of Boston’s newest venues. It opened in 2022 and holds 5,009 music lovers.

Opener
This was a unique concert in that there were co-headliners. Not only co-headliners but two fairly different bands. The opener was Meet Me @ the Altar, a band that is, in their words, here to dismantle rock music’s stereotypes riff by riff. They are such a fun band to watch. High energy, colourful ‘fits, and so much talent. Check out their alum Past//Present//Future. I caught their headlining show earlier this year at Paradise Rock Club in January for their Say It To My Face Tour.

Vibe On The Floor
Mother Mother and Cavetown each have their super-fans, oozing the fashion, feel and funk of each band from sparkly cheekbone, and 70’s inspired accessories to chunky concert shoes. Since Mother Mother has that loud rock energy with a punky hue and Cavetown is a little more seeing life through pink shades trip on a bedroom pop flying carpet there was an interesting mix on the floor. Somehow, whichever way you’re looking at the world the themes from each band were relatable and accessible to all which made this double headliner pairing work so well.

The Songs
Mother Mother is an Indie rock band from Vancouver Canada that has been around for just about two decades. They face the struggles of life head on with their songs. The set included one of their most popular songs Oh Ana off of their 2007 album Touch Up and Body from their 2008 album O My Heart.
Cavetown is Robbie Skinner and Robbie Skinner is Cavetown; A British singer-songwriter of delicately intimate indie pop. The single This is Home, was dedicated to anyone uncomfortable in their body or mind, and helped bring the show to a close. The set opened with Let Them Know They’re On Your Mind. Encore songs were Obvious and Devil Town

Vibe on Stage
This tryptic of a concert was high energy from each band, but they all had their own mood and look on stage. I could try to describe each one, but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I have shown you instead.

Lyrics to Linger Over
Lie awake, I sleep awake
I go to bed with all my lights turned on so I don’t slip away
I stay awake
Out on the street I keep a started car who only waits for me
ConvenientlySleep Awake, Mother Mother, O My Heart (2008)
Take myself by the hand, join the queue
What am I doing outside my bedroom?
Just felt like a kind thing to doa kind thing to do, Cavetown, Worm Food (2022)
